Anti-Reflective (AR) Coating
What it does: An anti-reflective coating reduces the amount of light that reflects off the surface of your lenses. Without it, you'll see reflections of light sources (lamps, headlights, screens) on the front and back of your lenses, which can be distracting for you and for people looking at you.
Who needs it: Almost everyone benefits from AR coating. It's particularly valuable for:
- Driving at night β reduces glare from oncoming headlights
- Screen use β reduces reflections from monitors and devices
- High-index lenses β which naturally reflect more light and almost always require AR coating
- Anyone who wants their lenses to look clearer and more cosmetically appealing
Verdict: AR coating is one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can make to any pair of lenses. We recommend it as standard.
Blue Light Filter Coating
What it does: A blue light filter coating reduces the amount of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light that passes through your lenses. Blue light is emitted by digital screens, LED lighting, and the sun.
Who needs it: Blue light lenses are popular with people who spend long hours in front of screens β computers, smartphones, tablets, and televisions. Some wearers report reduced eye strain and improved sleep quality when using blue light lenses in the evening, though the scientific evidence is still developing.
Verdict: A sensible choice if you're a heavy screen user or find your eyes feel tired after long periods at a computer. It's a relatively low-cost addition that many people find beneficial.
Scratch-Resistant Coating
What it does: A scratch-resistant (or hard) coating adds a harder surface layer to your lenses, making them more resistant to everyday scratches from cleaning, handling, and accidental contact.
Who needs it: Everyone, really β but it's especially important for:
- Children's glasses, which tend to take more knocks
- Anyone who frequently removes and replaces their glasses
- Polycarbonate and high-index lenses, which are naturally softer than standard plastic

UV Protection
What it does: UV coating blocks ultraviolet radiation from reaching your eyes. Prolonged UV exposure is linked to cataracts and other eye conditions.
Who needs it: Everyone. UV protection is particularly important if you spend a lot of time outdoors. Many modern lens materials (especially high-index and polycarbonate) include UV protection as standard, but it's worth confirming when ordering.
Verdict: Essential. If your lenses don't already include UV protection, add it.
Photochromic (Transitions) Lenses
What it does: Photochromic lenses automatically darken in sunlight and return to clear indoors. They combine the function of clear glasses and sunglasses in one pair.
